BEGINNER GUIDE

How pigeon racing works: a beginner’s guide

Learn how pigeon racing works: liberation, race distance, homing, timing, velocity and results, with a simple introduction for beginners.

The basic idea

In pigeon racing, birds are transported away from their home loft to a common liberation point and released. Each pigeon then flies back to its own loft. Because lofts are in different locations, results are normally based on the relationship between the distance flown and the time taken rather than simply the first clock time.

1. Liberation

The race begins when the pigeons are released together from the liberation point. Weather, wind and distance can all influence how demanding the journey is.

2. The journey home

Racing pigeons use their homing ability to return to their own loft. A loft manager chooses which birds to enter and prepares them in the days leading up to the race.

3. Timing and velocity

The arrival is recorded when a pigeon reaches its home loft. Race organisations can compare the measured distance with the elapsed time to calculate a velocity, allowing pigeons flying to different loft locations to be ranked fairly.

From local races to major competition

Pigeon racing can involve different levels of competition and a wide range of distances. Shorter races reward speed and preparation, while longer races place greater demands on endurance and recovery.

In Pigeon Racing Online these ideas are represented through scheduled races, individual bird attributes, preparation choices, permanent results and seasonal competition. The game simplifies parts of the real sport so that new players can learn as they play.
